Are Muslim Products always more Expensive? by Norjehan Zainul

In general in Malaysia if we compare Muslim and non-Muslim products,we noticed that Muslim products are always more expensive. But is it true for all cases? Below are some reasons for Muslim products to be more expensive. 1) Lack of resources. Halal gelatine for example are less available compared to gelatine from pig source.

2) Alcohol is a cheaper preservative compared to some types of halal preservatives. Alcohol is used to preserve many types of food and medicine

3) Not all Muslim products are more expensive than the non-Muslims'. Check out our products and you will find that the prices are cheaper than the our competitors without sacrificing quality. Go to any Muslim and third world countries and you will find meat, fish and many products are cheaper, fresher and tastier than in Europe, Second World countries and US.

4) Due to the lack of modern technology in many Muslim and other third world countries, less yield are obtained compared to their competitors who uses more modern means of cultivation such as . genetic modification (GM). The modern method not only save money, time and effort, it also produces more yield. But more often than not, you will find that the lesser technology applied to a product (food ). the healthier the food is. Read on to find out what might be in your dinner...

What you might be serving to your family

1) Genetically modified (GM) food This is a technical process whereby genes are transferred from one organism (animal, bacteria or plant) to another organism. It is predominantly grown in four countries US, Canada, Argentina and China Why is it used? *Higher yields on limited land

*More profit for big companies

*Pest resistance

*Satisfy world hunger

Possible dangers *GM food are not proven safe for long term

*Deplete the immune-systems of animals which eat GM food.

*May be toxic *Requires more chemical

*might cause allergy

*Body might be resistant to antibiotics

*loss of biodiversity,

*Unintended harm to other organisms

*Benefit big drug companies when more people will need antibiotics due to sickness *Patented by big companies, thus small scale farmers will have to

pay big companies if GM genes cross over into non-modified crops

2) Additives Propyl Gallate, BHA and BHT, Potassium

Bromate and Acesulfame-K are among many dangerous food additives added to

PROCESSED food to increase its flavour, preserve and give better texture to the food. It can cause

cancer and tumors of the brain, thyroid, adrenal gland and kidney in animal studies. So always read ingredients of food products when you buy for your family.

3) Hormones

In the meat industry, beef and chicken are given female sex hormones. This is meant to increase the weight of the animal in a short period of time. The meat industry also puts preservatives nitrite or nitrate in meat.Nitrate react with the amino group of amino acids of the meat or protein to

produce nitroso-amine. This is red pigment. This results in meat still looking red in its color,

as if it is fresh, even if it has been on the shelf for one or two weeks. While this may be good for the industry, it causes cancer.

Many people have heard the term "halal" meat and many Muslims like to talk about halal and haram and whether or not meat from a particular restaurant or supplier is halal to eat. When it comes down to it, the question can only be answered by fiqh (jurisprudence) and what the scholars deem correct. It is unlawful to eat meat slaughtered by a Zoroastrian, someone who has left Islam or an idol worshipper. 3. It is permissible to slaughter with anything that has a cutting edge: this does not include a tooth, bone, claw or the ...
